Fridge or freezer freezes up

• The error may be due to the weather and air temperature. In very hot periods, ice formations can sometimes occur, but these usually go away by themselves when the temperature drops.
   
• The error may be due to products that are completely up against the back wall. Products touching the back wall will cause condensation. Move the products forward, creating a space towards the back wall. This should prevent ice from forming.
   
• The error may be due to the door seal (also called the sealing strip) being broken. In this case, you may experience that the refrigerator freezes violently. You can test the door seal by placing a piece of paper between the door seal and the cabinet - if you can pull the paper out, the door seal does not seal tightly. Check the entire door seal.


• Check the following if the door seal does not seal tight:

1. Check that the cabinet is level.
2. Check if the door seal is printed in the hinge sides. If you have just switched the side of the door (i.e. moved the hinges from left to right or vice versa), then the seal may have taken form after the hinge, where it used to be. You may be able to fix this problem by heating the door seal with a hair dryer and then leaving the door closed for 6-8 hours. This will often cause the door seal to reseal itself.
3. Check if the door seal is intact. If it is not, you can find a new door seal for your refrigerator here.
    

• The error may be due to the door not closing properly. Check that neither door shelves nor food are touching the door. Also check the hinges. If the hinges are defective, you can find new hinges here.
   
• The error may be caused by a faulty thermostat or thermostat sensor. If the thermostat is faulty, you may find that the fridge starts auto-defrosting. Make sure that the door closes tightly, and that the fridge cools down to 5 degrees. Once you have made sure that the error is not caused by either of these, the issue is likely caused by a defective thermostat. Find a new thermostat here and new thermostat sensor here.
   
• The error may be due to the light not switching off - you may experience this if the light switch is defective or if the thermostat is connected incorrectly. In either case, the heat from the bulb will cause the compressor to run more than normal. Check it by touching the lamp glass to see if it is hot. If you find the fault in a defective light switch, you can buy a new light switch for your refrigerator here.
   
• The error can be caused by a faulty cooling system or a faulty compressor. In both cases, the fault may cause the fridge to run constantly and thus not defrost and you may experience that it gets colder than 5 degrees in the fridge. If the compressor runs continuously, the refrigerator will typically reach freezing temperature.
  If freezing temperature do not occur in the refrigerator, the fault is probably due to the cooling system being clogged or leaking - or the compressor is faulty. Repairing these faults requires special tools and the intervention of a refrigeration technician, and often it will not be worth the price compared to a new refrigerator.
