Emergency opening / The door cannot open after wash

Emergency opening

You may encounter that the door jams if the washing machine detects that there is still water in the machine. Most washing machines are equipped with an emergency opening which can be used when you cannot open the washing machine by pulling the door handle. By using the emergency opening, you will be able to "rescue" the laundry before it starts to turn sour and moldy.

How to emergency open the washing machine

First, you can try to emergency open the washing machine by switching off the power (remove the plug from the socket), wait 1 hour and then plug the washing machine back in. If this does not solve the problem, the washing machine probably has an emergency opening latch:

  1. Pull the latch
  2. At the same time that you pull the latch, you pull the door handle
  3. The washing machine door should now open

It may vary from model to model where the emergency opening latch is located, but on many washing machines you will find the emergency opening at the bottom of the washing machine by the filter access door. The emergency opening can, for example, be a rubber latch as shown in the picture - this will often be the case on Bosch, Neff and Siemens washing machines. When you pull the latch, the door lock is pulled at the same time, giving you the opportunity to open the door. Note that you must open the door by pulling the door handle at the same time as pulling the latch.

To solve the underlying problem that causes the door to jam, continue to the guide below the image.

If the washing machine door cannot be opened after the wash has ended, it may be due to one of the following:

  • Probable faultDoor lock

The fault may be due to a defective door lock. The door lock functions as a safety device, insuring that you won’t be able to open the door during a wash cycle, and if it is defective you may encounter that you will not be able to open the door after the wash has finished.

  • Possible faultClog

The fault may be due to the programming on the washing machine registering that there is still water in the drum. It will therefore be necessary to check if the pump filter, the drain hose, or possibly the bottom hose, which is placed in-between the tub and pump, is blocked.

  • Possible faultLevel hose

If there is water in the machine the fault could be caused by a blocked level hose, which is a thin hose that often runs from the pump housing or the bottom hose to the pressure switch. You can clean the level hose by soaking it in water. Replace if necessary.
